Ms. Katherine Mae G. Gonzalvo, Grade 10 student emerged victorious after garnering a total score of 36, just a one-point lead from her contenders from the 17 other regions nationwide. She was joined by Ms. Aleah Siducon, her coach during the contest and Mr. Bernard Balitao, Araling Panlipunan Supervisor from the City Schools Division of Pasig.

For three consecutive years, NCR delivered the best performance in the history of National Population Quiz since the Department of Education and Commission on Population first institutionalized the PopQuiz in 1982. The first championship of NCR was in 2016 followed by two more championships in 2017 and 2018 by the same school.

“The three consecutive wins of NCR in the National PopQuiz shows the determination, hard work and passion of the student–contestants, their coaches, heads and supervisors, not only in winning but in raising awareness on population and development issues among our students,” said RD Lydio M. Espanol as he congratulated the winner.

Another pride of NCR is Ms. Keith Shayne Cherevias, Grade 9 student from Upper Bicutan National High School from the City Schools Division of Taguig Pateros (TaPat) who ended second in the PopDev Essay Writing contest. She was joined by her coach Ms. Melisa A. Closas and Mr. Ferdinand Paggao, Araling Panlipunan Supervisor of TaPat.

The Population Quiz and On-the-Spot Skills Exhibition Contests are institutionalized events of the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Population (POPCOM) that aim to promote the participation of in-school youth on population and development issues and concerns, as well as an advocacy tool to promote the Philippine Population Management Program.

This year’s National Festival of Talents (NFOT) was hosted by the Department of Education-Region VII held on February 19-23, 2018 in Dumaguete City, attended by all regions in the country. Part of the NFOT is the Population and Development (PopDev) Events, which included the Population Quiz, Poster Making, Essay Writing, Jingle Writing, and Singing, and Debate- a newly added contest.

The next NFOT will be held in Vigan, Ilocos Sur on February 2019.
